I have a lawn business that is getting to big for me to manage alone, but I also do not want to take on any responsibilities as an employer. Would I be taking on any risks by helping someone build clientele and renting out my equipment to him until he can get his business going? Would this person be an independent contractor?

“Helping” alone might make you a “partner” so still you would be liable.
If you stick to ONLY renting then you might be OK.
Still you might be liable if “faulty” equipment causes some damages (it’s a tough job to be 100% free of liability).
