I’m starting my own business and I want to buy my family’s health insurance through the business because they do some work for me. However, I do not want to offer it to my employees who are not in my immediate family. Are there any regulations against this. I just want to know before I proceed any further. Thanks.

p.s. I’m in Georgia, so any rules for that state would be most helpful, but help from anywhere would be great too.

I’m not sure of the health insurance stipulations in Georgia. However, in Virginia it is fine to get health insurance through the company for just the owner and family and not include the employees.

Unless the State of Georgia requires companies to have health insurance (as Massachusetts does), then the answer is no, you do not have to offer your employees coverage. But, if you buy insurance for your family through your business, other employees are bound to find out and give you a hard time over it. Check with the State to find out what you are required to provide.
