How do you find out if a business claiming to be an LLC is actually a Limited Liability Corporation? Are there directories that I can search? Are there listings of LLC’s online?

Yes — you can go to your Secretary of State website.

They typically have online databases of corporations, LLCs and partnerships registered with the Secretary of State that you can search.

However, some offer this services for a fee.

You can search information for a business entity by going to State’s website where the business is located. It will give you baisc free information i.e. Business Status- Active, In-active etc. the date business starting doing business, and it will also let you know if the business is a domestic business (Created/ or Inc. in the state where it is located) or foreign business (Created/or Inc. in another state; for example business located in California but Incorporated/ Created in Delaware)

There are probably sites which offer to get info for you for a fee.

You can basic free information from every State. They have more detailed reports for a fee (which is always less than any commercial website)

In most states LLC’s Corporation fall under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of State. Every State website has a business section.
