I am confused on how the whole payment process works. I want my customers to be able to use a Debit or Credit cards whenever they purchase something. How would I get to transfer money from the customers bank account into mine in a safe way without them feeling like my business is a scam.

I know of Pay-Pal, but I am not 100% sure on how that works. Does my customer need a PayPal card or can they use a Credit or Debit card through Pay-Pal also?

Paypal is a very widely used and respected online service for transfering funds. The customer would just need to have a paypal account which takes maybe a minute to set-up and costs nothing. Most people who shop online will already have an account.

Paypal is basically a third party transaction processor. Your customer would put their credit or debit card information into paypal’s website when they wanted to buy something from you. The funds would then be transferred from paypal to you. I use it all the time on E-bay.

You should call one or all of the three major credit cards – MasterCard, Amex or Visa and ask them about corporate accounts where the money would be deposited.
Setting up pay pal is easy because a customer would have to link their credit card to their pay pal account (and you can put your own accounts on there to receive payments) and they would sign into Pay Pal to confirm which bank account their funds are being transfered from.
I am a BIG ebayer, and pay through pay pal to average people, not big businesses, and the person I pay gets the funds through my credit card pay pal account.
Whatever bank info you put on the Pay Pal account, it will transfer the funds to your bank. Also, you have to create a link to the PayPal site to give your customers the option to pay that way. Call Pay Pal to find out how you can create the link to their site so customers can pay securly.
    Good luck!

You can do some of the following:

    -Use PayPal
-Get a merchant account to accept credit cards online
    -Take Money Orders/Cashier’s checks
-Take personal checks (not recommended, may bounce)

PayPal takes Debit and Credit cards…not PayPal cards…cards like MC, Visa, etc, you can also write an echeck with paypal. There are lots of options. Check out

Okay, I’ll answer your last questions first, because they are the easiest to answer…

While PayPal does offer a debit card to its members, your customers will be able to pay you through PayPal using whatever credit card they wish (Visa, MasterCard, Amex, Discover) or with their PayPal accounts. They don’t have to have a PayPal account to pay you, either.

The money will land in your PayPal account and you can transfer it to your bank account, or use PayPal’s debit card to spend the money you make. I had the debit card and found it very handy.

Now, the payment process is a source of confusion for a lot of people.
The simplest way of selling something online is with a PayPal Buy Now button, which you create in your PayPal account. You then paste the HTML code that PayPal gives you into your product page.

If you want to project a professional image and/or have a bunch of products to sell, you’ll be using a shopping cart such as Zen Cart, X-cart or Magento. These carts are actually programs that run on your web server. They allow you to put up new products, edit prices, and look at customer orders. Shopping carts create the pages that customers see, and they let the customer add-to-cart and checkout on your site.

You will also need to sign up for a merchant account to accept credit cards over the internet.

The mystery of how the money flows is also taken care of by the shopping cart. You see, the shopping cart knows how to talk to the customer’s bank through something called a “payment gateway.” A payment gateway is pretty much the online equivalent of a credit card terminal that you would have in a retail store. Authorize.net is a commonly used payment gateway. When customers click the “Confirm Order” button, the shopping cart sends the customer’s credit card info and purchase amount through the payment gateway to the customer’s bank and the bank authorizes the purchase. The system then lets you and the customer know about the transaction AND it sends the customer’s money to your bank.

    A couple more notes:
The merchant account/payment gateway method is the “normal” way of accepting payments, though a lot of shops offer both methods. Most shopping carts will give you the option of accepting payments through PayPal and through a merchant account/payment gateway.

As far as customers feeling like your business is a scam…your high quality site design and the time you spend making everything look and work perfectly on your site will let them know you are a reliable and trustworthy merchant.
