Business Directory

ss plan software is something that often gets overlooked and isn’t considered to be a necessity for some reason. In my opinion, business plan software is essential, it is not a luxury. I am a huge advocate of business planning. When people ask me if they need a business plan, my response is, “Absolutely!” You see, starting a business without a business plan is akin to starting college without a degree plan. If you don’t know where you are going, you won’t know how to get there. You will waste your time and your money if you are not following a plan. It’s really that simple!

So, you know you need a business plan, but what about business plan software? For business planning, there are really three alternatives: 1) crafting your own business plan from scratch; 2) hiring a business plan writer or business planning consultant; or 3) using business plan software to write your own business plan. Each of these alternatives has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Writing your own business plan from scratch is certainly a possibility. Doing so gives you the freedom to format and arrange the plan in any way that you see fit. On the other hand, doing financial projections, which are necessary for the purpose of budgeting and financial planning, can be difficult to do without a business plan program, or at least financial projection software or spreadsheets.

Hiring a business plan writer makes sense for some people. A business plan writer is generally well-versed in business planning and will have insight that will assist you in preparing a comprehensive business plan that takes everything into account. The disadvantages to having your business plan professionally written are the expense associated with the initial plan, and the limitations that exist in regard to changing it as your business evolves, which is something that business plan software empowers you to do.

Business plan software is relatively inexpensive when compared to hiring a professional business plan writer or consultant. However, when compared to doing your own plan from scratch, it may seem like an unnecessary expense. Business plan software does have many advantages. A good business plan software package, like Business Plan Pro by Palo Alto, has the headings and categories for a business plan already set up for you. It also has guidance throughout the business planning process that explains what to include in each part of your business plan.

What I really love about Business Plan Pro is that it is so easy to do financial projections using the business plan software, whether or not you understand accounting. The main financial sections include a section for start-up costs, one for income projections, one for a proforma balance sheet, and one for a projected cash flow statement. Information that input into one of the financial forms automatically transfers calculations to the other financial statement forms making the process of projecting your financial plan a breeze.

Another huge advantage I see in regard to business plan software is that when you use business plan software to create your own business plan, you can make changes to it anytime you need to. It doesn’t become a stale document that sits on the shelf and collects dust. A business plan should be always evolving. You should update your business plan frequently including new goals, objectives and milestones. You should also adjust your financial projections regularly for the purpose of budgeting. Business plan software makes it easy to do.

If you choose not to use business software, and to create your own business plan from scratch, you will need some guidance unless you are a professional business planner yourself. The Small Business Administration at sba.gov has some excellent resources and guides about business planning. If you choose to hire a professional business plan writer, do review their qualifications and references and make certain that you understand exactly what is included in the business planning services they are offering.

New York City Job Listings

Business Directory

Have you been giving out your custom business cards but you do not seem to get a phone call? Did you spend a significant amount of money for business card printing only to find that no one really cares to look at them? Are you having difficulty giving out your custom business cards altogether? There are several ways why a business card can fail. This usually relates to you, the business card holder yourself, or the look and feel of your business card. Here we have collected several common reasons why people ignore your business cards, or throw them out altogether. Try to see where you got it wrong.

Poor Business card etiquette: The most common reason why business cards get thrown out is because of poor business card etiquette. Some people might not know it but there is more to giving business cards than just whipping it out and giving it to people like a flier. Give your business cards in good taste, and for a reason. When you encounter a possible business contact, be friendly and ask about them. Do not just give them your business card. Explore each others interests first, especially in business. If something comes up that is related to your field then it is a good time to introduce yourself as someone who wants to do business and give them your business card. This way you establish a real relationship with the color business card as the bridge.

Internationally, there are also some important business card etiquette reminders you should follow. In general, when you are giving your business cards, also ask if the receiver has his or her own business card at hand. This way it tells them that you care for making a contact and not marketing yourself. Also in some countries a specific gesture must be made to give business cards. In Japan for example, your business card is your honor. It is presented with both hands carefully, with a small bow to denote respect. Whipping out your full color business card and just casually handing it over is a sign of ill manners. Make sure that when you visit another country you know business card customs like this to prevent from appearing a rude or ignorant foreigner. Business card etiquette is just as important as the card itself so don’t forget about them.

Incomplete, Outdated or Dubious details Some people, on the rush to print business cards do not check the details and the fine print. A common reason why business cards fail is that the details contained in the business card is wrong. For example, if your company suddenly moves to a new location, or you suddenly changed phone or fax numbers your business card details are automatically invalid. When people attempt to contact you again, they will fail to reach you. People might think that your business card might be a bit dubious and throw it away. Even if it is only a little change, always update your business card design with new details and print business cards again for distribution. This ensures its integrity. Make sure that the pertinent contact details like the telephone number, mobile phone number, address, web page URL and email address are included with your name and title as you print your designs again. Stop being cute.

Uninspired Design If you used a simple business card template for your card design then that might be the reason why your business card is failing. Uninspired designs are a mark of laziness when it comes to business card printing. Your design must be eye-catching, easily noticeable and if possible have a picture of you, or an image if your business. This helps people remember you card based on its design. Plain business cards are hardly interesting and would probably end up in the trash.

Substandard material Lastly, try to print your business cards made with durable materials. Picking out the cheapest paper to print your business card is totally the wrong decision to make. People place business cards in different places like their wallets, drawers, handbags etc. Besides the usual wear and tear, accidents may happen and business cards can degrade or fade over time. If your business cards become shabby after only a short amount of time, some people might not consider contacting their owners. Always invest in the best material you can afford so that your business cards last well in the years.

Those are the reasons why your business card can fail. Sound familiar? If they do, then you have something t o improve upon before the next opportunity for giving your business cards. Keep a steady head and make those cards fly!

For comments and inquiries about the article visit: Custom Business Cards, Business Card Printing

RSS Feed Reader

Business Directory

There are five business success factors (critically important core profit principles) that all businesses share – both small business and large. In times of economic crisis like these, they are essential. And, they can make the difference between just getting by – or you getting ahead in your business.

Here, we’ll explore what they are – and how you can put them to work for you in your own business. These principles form the basis for most success in business achieved by entrepreneurs, business owners, business managers, and professionals. Without following them at least to some extent, you’ll find business to be a struggle – and much less rewarding than it could be.

As you read this, see how well your own thinking and actions in business stack up to these five core principles:

1) Profits are essential for your business to succeed – they are what pays you.

You don’t have to look far to find examples of businesses imploding due to lack of profits. (The current banking and financial crisis immediately comes to mind… Or, remember the dot-com bubble?… the spend, spend, spend your way to market share type of thinking.) And, those are just some larger, more visible examples… small businesses are at even more risk.

Ultimately, profits are the essential key ingredient for business survival – and your focus on them is key. The very existence of your business depends on a steady-stream of profits… to pay your bills… your salary… your employees… your vendors and suppliers… and to secure your financial future.

Profits make the difference between the success or failure of your enterprise. They’re the essence of being in business and are the fruits of your labor. Without profits (or deep pockets), you can’t last long.

2) Most businesses miss profit opportunities on almost every transaction or customer/client relationship – and are limiting their incomes without even knowing it.

Here again, you won’t have to look far for examples. Just think of all the leads that don’t get proper follow-up, the customers/clients that receive only occasional communications (if any), the up-sells, cross-sells and add-on sales that could have been part of a given transaction, the unrealized intangible opportunities that exist in your customer/client or vendor/supplier relationships – and you can begin to see a sad pattern.

It’s a pattern of profit opportunities gone by… wasted utilization of assets… or under-realized profit potential in your transactions. In many cases, business owners, managers and professionals are completely unaware of their lost profit opportunities.

Make your expenditure of time, energy, capital, and resources produce more for you – and capture the money that most businesses miss. Think about your sales, marketing, and advertising process as a total package – and create, test, and put in place processes that take advantage of strengths in your business.

3) Stability and security comes from creating a “Web of Profits” in your business.

Do you have a number of different sources within your business to support you? Or, are you relying on only a few? Or, even worse, relying on only ONE primary source of profit?

The majority of businesses rely on fewer than five profit sources – and think in terms of “profit centers.” In other words, a collection of different channels of profit from individual sales of products or services (retail), bulk sales (wholesale), joint ventures, ownership interests, licensing and/or other arrangements, and so on.

But, when you create a “Web of Profits” in your business – that is, an interconnected approach that integrates a variety of profit sources and activities together into a single unit of functionality – you stand a better chance of leveraging your business in new ways.

4) The focus on Increasing Profits is more beneficial than the focus on Cost-Cutting.

In times of recession or economic crisis, sometimes cost-cutting is the only logical and sane option. If you’re bleeding… you stop the bleeding before anything else. But, when it comes to cost-cutting, the effect is temporary and fleeting. Once you’ve drastically reduced your expenses, any additional cost-cutting might hurt your business’s effectiveness and viability.

Crisis management aside, it’s much better to focus on getting more business, to create new profit sources, run better promotions, do better advertising and marketing, and generally operate your business in a more customer/client oriented way.

That’s what eases the pressure from high-costs… and provides you with what you need from your business. The thinking that goes into a profit-oriented focus and mindset can often provide innovative and inspirational breakthroughs in results.

5) Strategically plan for Profits – and take the specific action steps needed to implement your plan.

Being laser-focused on profits – rather than your strategic planning being primarily focused on revenue – takes you to the next level in your business plan. You’ll be able to see alternative profit possibilities – and the action steps needed – so you can build them directly into your plan.

By their very nature, business plans focus on the bottom-line – and usually they just focus on the obvious sources – not necessarily on the alternative profit possibilities. And it’s these alternative profits that most businesses miss… profits that could even eclipse what’s being produced by your current business activities.

Often, the biggest difference between those who are able to implement new profit sources and those who aren’t – is simply the willingness to identify what potential alternative profit sources exist… to prioritize the order in which you want to implement them… and to know exactly which action steps to take. Then, of course, to simply get started – and systematically put them into practice in your business, one-by-one.

Copyright © 2008, Guerrilla Profits International
